Storyteller Of The Week: Toni Morrison, A Storyteller With A Gift For Humanity

The literary world has lost another icon, Toni Morrison. Born on the 18th of February 1931, she died on the 5th of August at age 88, to the dismay of the storytelling world.

Morrison was an American novelist, essayist, editor, teacher and university professor.

She studied English Language at Howard University and later became the first black female editor in fiction at Random House in New York City in the 1960s.

She is a recipient of many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented to her by former United States President, Barrack Obama.

Morrison became the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993.

Having to raise her two sons by herself after her marriage suffered divorce, Morrison said she had to wake up as early as 4 am to write. She wrote her first novel The Bluest Eye, at age 39.

Morrison won Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her 1987 novel Beloved. Her notable works include “Tar Baby” “Songs Of Solomon” “God help the child” to name a few.

Media Mogul, Oprah Winfrey produced and starred in the screen adoption of “Beloved” in 1998

One of the first books she worked on was the groundbreaking Contemporary African Literature (1972), a collection that included work by Nigerian writers Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe and South African playwright Athol Fugard.

On the reason she waited till she was 39 before writing her first novel, Morrison said: “I read and Read and read until I was 39 and then, there was a book I wanted to read, couldn’t find it, so I wrote it.”

We at stationmag.com acknowledge the loss of this literary icon, who led her life for the purpose of promoting the course of humanity with her pen, and also liberating the imagination of many literature lovers.

Toni Morrison is one storyteller for the week.
