Dozens of Pupils Killed As Building Housing A School Collapses In Lagos Island

A three-storey building in Lagos Island that is housing a school has collapsed killing dozens of pupils and residents.

The building, near Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island was said to have caved in around 10:20am on Wednesday.

According to reports, pupils of the school on the top floor of the building seems to account for the highest casualty of the building collapse.

The structure is reported to be a residential building with several apartments.

Station Magazine understand that emergency and rescue workers are currently at the scene of the incident.

In a related development, the Public Affairs Unit of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adebayo Kehinde, while speaking to the press, revealed that least 50 children have so far been rescued from a three-storeyed building.

“The search and rescue operation is presently ongoing with so many victims rescued alive from the collapsed building through combined efforts of LASEMA and other emergency responders such as the Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Federal Fire Service. Others include National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Rapid Response Squad, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Nigeria Red Cross Society, Lagos State Neighborhood and Safety Corps.

“The exercise is being coordinated by the General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Mr Adesina Tiamiyu with the deployment of heavy and light rescue equipment from LASEMA and its stakeholders.”
