Because You Love Me (Part 5) (Prose Series)

“Hey baby, it’s me,” he said. I was dumfounded has I didn’t know what to say. “Can we see tomorrow at your lunch?” he said almost immediately.

“Yes,” I said, without even thinking about it. I didn’t bother to even ask him if he knows the address to where I work.

“Goodnight” he muttered. He hung up before I could find my voice.

I barely slept, as I took time to collect the dress I will be meeting Demaji in. I wore a straight kneel length black dress and a light makeup.

I couldn’t concentrate well at work, as I keep checking my phone for his call and glance out the window at intervals to check for a visiting car.

At exactly lunch break, his call came in, my heart skipped, but damn it, I was so looking forward to seeing him. I picked up immediately.

“I’m outside”, he announced into the receiver. The walk to the gate was like a thousand miles, my leg kept shaking as I walk.

“You shouldn’t be scared,” I said to myself, “he is the one who hurt me,” I thought again,

“He left me and made me marry someone else” I blurted loudly to myself. But then I have always loved him, I thought again.

“Can I hug you? he asked when I met him as he leaned on his white SUV car.

I don’t know what emotion to portray, hate, angry or love? I fell into his stretched hands has he received me with absolute warmth.

“Baby girl, I can explain,” he whispered into my ears. My eyes became clouded with tears as they form under my lid, can we go away from here I asked him politely. he walked me to the passenger’s side, he opened the door for me. All this while, my heart kept racing, not because I’m meeting Oladimeji alone, but because I don’t want people to see me with a man, who’s not my husband. I got married barely a few weeks ago remember. He got into the car and turn on the music player, then our favorite song back in those days was the first song he played (Celine Dion’s because you love me

I stared at him as the song rang into my ears. he turned to face me briskly and said “baby, I miss you so much,” the word hit me like an Ak47 gun. The water that had formed under my lid finally found an escape route down my cheek. Tears ran down my eyes as he held down my hands. He drove out of town, he said he doesn’t want us to stay around where I am well known, I nod in affirmation.

We got to our destination, which he arranged to be a private lunch for us. We got seated, then he asked me If I was still planning to go back to the school?

“I already told the principal that I needed to go somewhere from lunch,” I replied him, “but I still need to go back to the school later for my car.”

“What do you care for,?” Oladimeji asked as we settled in.

“I care to hear all that happened and the reason for your sudden disappearance,” I said aloud.

He cleared his throat to talk, just then we heard noises coming from outside and then people scampering for safety, people ran into the private lounge for safety, before we could comprehend the cause of the commotion, gunshot rant the serenity of the environment. Bullets were flying about like stray birds than I s realized that a robbery was taking place. I stood up from under the table I hid when the hullabaloo started, I had even forgotten I came to the restaurant with somebody.

It all felt like I was in a trance, I move around hoping the worst hasn’t happened. The cry of people jolt me back to reality, there were few dead bodies on the floor, no this can’t happen I thought to myself. I never knew the impact of the robbery was this much, I moved round in circle calling out Dimeji’s name,

“Oladimeji” I kept shouting as loud as I can, I checked the bodies laying helplessly on the floor just in case he was hit by a bullet.

“Feyi,” I heard my name faintly, I ran to the direction it came from, he was bleeding profusely,

“Oh no, don’t go, stay with me,” I said, as I try lifting him up. About 10minutes later, the police and ambulance arrived to take the casualties away, I took the key to Oladimeji’s car from his pocket and drove behind the ambulance to the hospital. He was rushed into the emergency unit upon our arrival, I was scared to the bone marrow, I don’t want to lose him now that I found him again, I prayed silently.
