The Rwandan People, led by their five-team president marked the 25th anniversary of the country’s 1994 genocide in a somber ceremony on Sunday.
With the presence of leaders of some countries of the world, the people of Rwanda remembered the massacre of up to 800,000 Hutist by Tutsis who blamed the Hutsis for the plane crash that led to the death of the Tutsis president in 1994.
“In 1994, there was no hope, only darkness. Today, light radiates from this place … How did it happen? Rwanda became a family once again,” Kagame said.
The president added that “our people have carried an immense weight with little or no complaint. This has made us better and more united than ever before.”
“What happened here will never happen again.”
Kagame, who has helped steer the country through economic recovery, but has been accused of rights abuses as well as failing to lead a national reconciliation about the violence. Many of the killers remain free and many families were never able to locate their relatives’ remains.
The violence also highlighted a failure on the part of international peacekeeping forces. Shortly after the genocide began, the U.N. Security Council pulled most U.N. peacekeepers out of Rwanda, causing the tragedy to be “compounded by the faltering response of the international community,” the United Nation said.
