Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Is Giving Out N50,000 To Encourage Reading

Award-winning writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has taken to social media to encourage constant reading. She is introducing a reading contest.

Adichie, who took to her Instagram account to encourage Nigerians to read more, observes that many people, including herself, do not read as much as they used to.

To encourage reading, Adichie is doing an N50,000 give away.

The author of the best selling novel, “Half of the Yellow Sun” and others amazing literary works, reveals that reading is “the entertainment form and the art form that gives us the most back.”

Adichie stated that she was inspired to encourage readers with the cash prize by a woman who reveals that she pays her daughter to read.

Adichie will be rewarding ₦50,000 to “young Nigerians (and Nigerians young at heart)” for their response of no more than 100 words to a short story.

The author will share the link to the short story on January 15. Participants should send in their response to the short story by January 17, 9pm West African Time.

The response to the short story “can be in any form and about anything in the story, it can be about what you liked, disliked, what moved you, what struck you, what you learned, what surprised you. It can be a clever riff or a grave précis. It can illuminate a character untangle a plot point, or lay bare a hidden motive.”

According to Adichie, the winner of the contest, who must have a Nigerian Bank Account, will have his/her cash prize sent to his account after the announcement.
