Researchers Discover Two New Drugs Are Effective In Treating Ebola

New research has discovered two new drugs that are said to be effective in treating patients suffering from Ebola Virus.

Two of the drug trailed to treat patients in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were discovered to be potent in the cure of the disease.

According to research, 90 percent of patients suffering from the disease can survive the virus if they are treated early with the drugs.

About 700 patients took part in the process of experimenting the said drugs with the preliminary results from the first 499 now known.

While REGN-EB3 and mAb114 gave a 90% survival rate by attacking the Ebola virus with antibodies, ZMapp and Remdesivir were found less effective.

The efforts to come up with a drug that can be used to treat the disease stated in November 2018 by international research group coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and co-sponsored by US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

BBC reports that two people who had suffered from the virus were released from a treatment centre in Goma, eastern DR Congo, and reunited with their families after they were confirmed cured by the drug.

“From now on, we will no longer say that Ebola is incurable,” said Jean-Jacques Muyembe, director-general of the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale in DRC, which has overseen the trial.

The latest outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to the death of 1803 person, and also force Rwanda, a neighbour to the east African country to close its border in a bid to prevent a spread of the virus.
